New S60 Java VM

As of S60 FP 2, Nokia will be changing their Java ME VM…

"Prior to 3rd Ed fp 2, S60 Java had traditional CLDC VM architecture where all API code (class files) were compiled into the virtual machine executable. Now the Java API implementation code is no longer in the VM executable but will be dynamically loaded when needed."

For people not familiar with Java ME implementations, let’s dissect this a little. JAVA ME is actually implemented using (written in) JAVA ME itself (class files mentioned above) together with JNI style calls into Symbian c++/c to do stuff on the platform. Previously, all this was compiled up into one huge exe - in fact if you look in the SDK you can see it’s the largest exe on the S60. It takes a long time (and a lot of memory) to start this up - this is reflected in the very long startup time for a Java ME application on pre- S60 FP 2. Loading parts of the VM only as required will now save time and memory.

Additionally…

"The new architecture allows us to dynamically extend the virtual machine with new APIs."

Examples are the new eSWT implementation and access to Internet access points, device IMEI, network access type (gprs / csd etc.), network id, network signal level, battery level, country code, date and time formats via system properties.

I am in two minds whether these kind of extension are a good thing. On the one hand they provide valuable information to Java ME applications. However, they are non-standard and don’t comply to any JSR. This means code that uses them won’t work on non-S60 phones. Hence, extensions like this increase fragmentation for developers.

Perhaps adaptations like this aren’t so bad when the platform itself has a large installable market. For example, you can do much more under BlackBerry Java ME due to it’s proprietary extensions. Enterprise customers for a Java app are happy limiting device choice to just BlackBerry so it’s less of an issue. However, initially at least, the S60 3rd FP 2 market will be very small and there’s bound to be end user confusion as to what Java apps will work on what phones.

Native or Custom UI?

An issue I have never resolved is whether (or when) it’s best to use the native UI or create your own custom UI from basic drawing primitives. What do I mean? Here are some examples…

Here are three styles of menu taken from ProfiMail, the S60 native email application (in the middle) and Gmail (Java). ProfiMail creates it’s own ‘Menu’ and ‘Exit’ soft key items as shown by non standard text and size. Both ProfiMail and Gmail have their own styles of menu…

This shows a file explorer view in X-plore and the S60 file explorer. Notice how much more information can be put in the screen when you forego the native controls…

This shows settings from Gmail, S60 standard settings style (found in most applications) and Palringo. Both GMail and Palringo re-define how settings are presented to the user (and are co-incidentally similar even though they are implemented in different languages!)…

Taking Nokia as an example for the moment, they go to great lengths to specify how the UI should look and behave. The reasoning is that users should have a consistent look and feel that, in turn, should improve usability when switching between applications.

I think these are the main reasons why some people create their own UI…
For technical reasons, for example, cross platform source code or ‘look and feel’ compatibility. e.g. Lonely Cat Games, author of ProfiMail and X-plore, produces software for both Symbian and Microsoft devices so can share UI code across platforms.
To gain extra functionality not available via the native controls e.g. Shortcut keys in menus
To get more on the screen e.g. In case of ProfiMail
To make the UI look ‘better’ - even if it does violate platform guidelines

So, people do this to improve usability yet companies like Nokia prefer you to stay within the UI guidelines also for usability. Who is right?

Ericsson completes T-Mobile Germany network modernization in record time

With Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) as EDGE supplier and telecom services partner, T-Mobile Germany has completed the first part of its GSM network modernization in record time - a major step towards the operator's goal of being the first operator in Germany to offer mobile broadband nationwide. Consuming about 30 percent less power, the new EDGE-compliant GSM radio network allows for the seamless use of mobile broadband applications.

The new network provides particular benefits for consumers and enterprise customers in sparsely populated areas, where neither DSL nor WCDMA/HSPA are yet available, by providing fast mobile-internet access with bandwidth four times that of ISDN. Users also benefit from EDGE data capabilities and improved network quality.

Over the past 24 months, Ericsson has upgraded more than half of T-Mobile's radio network, replacing more than 10,000 base stations in seven federal states with the network operating commercially and without subscribers noticing any deterioration in service.

Günther Ottendorfer, Chief Technology Officer at T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH, says: "A system swap during commercial operations is like open-heart surgery. We appreciate the fact that, together with our partner Ericsson, we were able to finish the project three months ahead of the original schedule. For us this was uncharted territory. BenQ T33 music phone

BenQ concluded its week with news of the T33, a new music-oriented slider phone designed for ease of use above all else. A side music key automatically cues up the music player regardless of where the user might be in the interface, helping manage AAC and MP3 tracks.

The number pad also implements a unique, wave-like design which is said to be easy to use for dialing while also being fashionable. MicroSD cards up to 2GB hold the phone's pre-recorded media as well as photos or AVI and MPEG-4 videos captured using the 2-megapixel camera. An FM radio tuner is also available as an alternative source of entertainment, BenQ says.

The phone operates on a tri-band GSM radio and so is most likely to be sold in BenQ's Asian home as well as in Europe. Although focused on media, the handset relies primarily on the legacy GPRS format for connecting to the Internet rather than EDGE or a 3G technology like HSDPA. BenQ did not mention an exact release date or a price, though the T33 may be ready immediately and is expected to sell for relatively little without the added mobile broadband chipset.

Samsung Juke SCH-U470 - blue (Verizon Wireless)

When we first saw the Samsung Juke SCH-U740, we weren't sure if it was a cell phone or an MP3 player. Its shape is reminiscent of the lipstick design of the Nokia 7380, but unlike the 7380, the Juke has a swivel hinge that swings the phone open to reveal a keypad. This unique design certainly gives the Juke some serious sex appeal, but that's about where it stops. Feature-wise, the Juke is a bit of a dud. There's no video-recording capability, and most disappointing of all is the lack of V Cast access. For a music-focused phone like this, we would've really liked to have V Cast Music access so we could download music on the fly. But the disappointment doesn't stop there; the lack of an expandable memory slot and a few design annoyances make the Juke a lot less sexy than we thought it was at first. The Samsung Juke is available from Verizon Wireless for $99.99 with a two-year contract.

Design

At first glance, the Juke does indeed look like a distant cousin of the Nokia 7380, one of Nokia's lipstick-shaped phones. It almost has the same dimensions at 3.82 inches by 1.18 inches by 0.83 inch, which makes it resemble a large pack of chewing gum. Since it's so small, it's also quite lightweight, at 2.82 ounces. On closer inspection, however, the Juke looks quite different. It has a spun-metal scroll wheel similar to the LG Chocolate VX8550, and above the scroll wheel is a skinny, 1.45-inch display. The display supports 262,000 colors, which is great, but since the screen is so small, it didn't make a big impact. Images still looked great though. You can adjust the screen's backlight time and brightness, plus the style and size of the dial fonts. When holding the Juke closed with the scroll wheel on the bottom, the hold switch, the charger, and the headset jack are on the left spine, while the volume rocker is on the right.

The opening mechanism is where the Juke sets itself apart from most phones. You have to turn the phone upside down (so that the "Samsung" brand name is upside down, too) and then nudge the bottom-right corner of the display inward. The phone will then swivel open like a switchblade in a swift, satisfying motion to reveal the keypad. We found it a little annoying that we had to keep turning the phone around to read the screen, depending on whether the phone is open or closed. If the music player is activated when the phone is closed, the music track information is displayed horizontally, so that you have to read the screen with the scroll wheel to the right of the display. The scroll wheel is then used to scroll through the playlist as well as to fast-forward or rewind the music.

The keypad is predictably skinny, and all the keys have a slightly reflective surface that resembles mirrored tile. The navigation array consists of the aforementioned scroll wheel, the typical two soft keys, the Send and End/Power keys, a Clear key, and a dedicated camera key. We found the keypad to be pretty crowded, and the slick and flat feeling of the keys didn't help much. There were slight delineations between each key though, which made dialing by feel possible if a little tricky. On the back of the Juke is a camera lens and a speaker, and when the phone is open, you can see a self-portrait mirror.

Features

While the Samsung Juke may have wowed us with its design, it certainly failed to do that with its features. But before we go into why we're so disappointed, let's start with the basics. The Samsung Juke comes with a 500-entry phone book with room in each entry for five numbers, two e-mail addresses, and notes. Contacts can also be paired with a group, a picture for caller ID, or 1 of 11 polyphonic ringtones. Other basic features include a vibrate mode, a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, voice commands, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a world clock, and a notepad. There's also instant messaging and stereo Bluetooth support.

We feel that the most important thing lacking from this feature set is the lack of 3G support, plus the lack of mobile Web access. This means that the Juke does not have access to V Cast Music, which is arguably one of Verizon's biggest strengths in the mobile music space. The inability to download music over the air makes the Juke look almost crippled when compared to other music phones in Verizon's stable, like the LG Chocolate or the LG VX8350. Sure, the phone may have a good music player (as we'll go into in the next paragraph), but the lack of V Cast Music in a supposedly music-focused phone from Verizon is a pretty big misstep.

As the name implies, the Samsung Juke has a built-in music player. It's only accessible when the phone is closed, and you can use the scroll wheel to navigate through the playlist and music options. The interface is pretty generic, though you do have a choice of music player skins, such as a visualizer or album artwork. The Juke also has a choice of preset equalizer and 3D sound settings. As mentioned, the only way to sync up music to the Juke is via PC syncing, and you can do this with either Windows Media Player or Verizon's own Music Manager software. The music player supports MP3, WMA, WMA Pro, AAC, and AAC+ file formats. The Juke doesn't have an expandable memory slot, so you're stuck with the 2GB of internal storage.

The Juke also has a pretty basic VGA camera, which is able to take photos in three different resolutions (640x480, 320x240, and 160x120). Other camera options include night-shot mode, a self-timer, brightness, white-balance settings, quality settings, "are you ready?" sounds, shutter sounds (plus a silent option), color effects, and a multishot mode. Photo quality was all right for a VGA camera; images did have muted colors and blurry edges, but they still looked better than most other VGA cameras. The camera does not have a camcorder function.

What S60 has become

I tend to personally use two phones at any one time - one for work and one I carry around if I say, go out for the evening. Why do I have two phones? Well, to be honest, I haven’t been that impressed with the size, weight and bulk of smartphones - whatever the OS or brand - and can’t be bothered carrying them around if I don’t have to.

For a long time I have used a humble old Nokia 6100 (S40) as my ’social’ phone - probably Nokia’s smallest phone at only (102 x 44 x 17 mm).
This week I purchased Nokia 6120 classic for development testing. First of all I was amazed at the low cost (only £169.99 at play.com). The size (105 x 46 x 15 mm) compares well with the 6100. You also get HSDPA (T-Mobile HSDPA in the UK seems faster than my broadband!). OK, the camera is only 2M pixel but it’s OK for snapshots.

The phone is single CPU which has brought down the cost. Surprisingly, performance doesn’t seem to have suffered. This is the type of mid-range phone that Symbian and Nokia hopes will help ramp up sales volumes. Forget the N95 or S60 iPhone lookalike which are really niche products. The 6120c is the type of phone that can make S60 (and Symbian) in the short term - S60 really has to start achieving higher sales volumes and break into the mass-market. It’s strange there hasn’t been much advertising or PR for this phone.
From now on, I think I’ll be using just one phone for work and play.

Dealers exposed by mobile phone

Residents in West Oxford are fighting back against drug dealers by taking mobile phone pictures of them doing deals - to give the photos to the police.
Police admit that drug use has increased dramatically in the Botley Road and Osney area in the past few months - following crackdowns in other parts of the city.
Now residents are trying to drive the dealers out of West Oxford - by gathering evidence of deals taking place close to family homes.
Colin Cook, Labour city councillor for Jericho and Osney, said: "Some residents have started to take mobile phone pictures of dealers.
"Deals are taking place in the Oatlands recreation ground which are clearly visible from people's homes.
"Mobile phone cameras are quite hi-tech these days, and residents can take pictures of dealers from their windows.

"People need to be discreet about it because the key thing is that they shouldn't put themselves at risk."
Last month, officers made three arrests after discovering a hoard of suspected class A drugs in a house on Botley Road.
Two users in the past fortnight have suffered drugs overdoses while in Botley Park.
Staff at West Oxford Community Centre in Botley Road say they find about five needles used to inject heroin discarded every morning.

Caretaker Shah-Nawaz Khan, 17, said: "I find used needles stuck in the ground and in the drain. We find them every morning. It is really bad round here and under Botley Bridge.
"A lot of people come and complain when they find a needle, and say they don't want their children playing here."
Steve Stuart, the owner of Warlands cycle shop on Botley Road, called for a bigger police presence in the area to tackle the dealers and added: "Some residents are taking mobile phone pictures of dealers. It's quite a drastic step to take, but it shows how desperate people are to get rid of the dealers.
"People need to make sure they take these pictures covertly because you don't want to be assaulted by a drug dealer or an addict who is too far gone to give a damn about the consequences."
Kate Smith, a spokesman for Oxford Police, said residents should report suspicious drugs activity to the police but "not put themselves at risk".

Hollywood Seeks Ways to Fit Its Content Into the Realm of the iPhone

LOS ANGELES, June 24 — The iPhone doesn’t go on sale until Friday, but Steven P. Jobs, the chief executive of Apple, is already changing the perception of the mobile phone, from a quick way to call a friend to a hip, media-friendly device. In doing so, he has forced mobile phone and Hollywood executives to react by chasing hungrily after the newest thing or face being left behind.
Mobile phone makers are scurrying to offer new products to compete with the iPhone’s touch screen. Wireless carriers also seem more willing to listen to their partners’ advice. And in Hollywood, where Mr. Jobs’s convention-defying tactics are all too familiar, media executives are eagerly preparing for a new era as they hope to position more content where consumers want it: in their hands.
Two years ago, David Ulmer, senior director of entertainment products at Motorola in Sunnyvale, Calif., and his colleagues got a “no, thank you” from wireless carriers when they tried to pitch a mobile phone with a touch screen. “Now, we are finding it easier to get people to talk to us,” Mr. Ulmer said. “Apple has changed the perception of how sexy a phone can be. Now, everyone wants to get in. It’s a whole new world. We’re in talks with everyone, Universal Studios, Time Warner, you name it.”
But perhaps the biggest shift is the notion that in the not-too-distant future, these various groups — which have worked together uneasily so far — could find themselves as competitors as consumers demand more and better access to media and care less about how they get it.
For years, mobile phone carriers like AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint have closely controlled what cellphone users watch, when they watch it, and on what kind of screen they watch it — much the way the networks did with television before new technologies loosened their grip. Many in Hollywood and Silicon Valley hope the iPhone’s multimedia features will make it easier for any mobile-crazed consumer to do the same things they do on the Web: watch their favorite television shows, download maps, send e-mail messages to friends and swap videos.
In what is the beginning of many attempts to make the cellphone more Web friendly, Apple has designed its own application so consumers can receive YouTube videos through a Wi-Fi network. Industry executives predict that as it becomes easier to get information via Wi-Fi networks, more consumers will bypass traditional wireless networks altogether. That prospect, while helpful for phone makers and media concerns, is frightening for service providers if consumers begin to regard them as irrelevant.
“Video, particularly, has largely been behind a wall,” said John Smelzer, the general manager of mobile operations for Fox Interactive Media, referring to the limited and clumsy access most consumers have to news, sports and entertainment on traditional cellphones. “It’s the antithesis of what’s happening on the Web. Any device that replicates the experience online is good for the entire industry. It will help us reach a mass audience,” he said.
Even Mr. Jobs’s competitors, who are quick to point out that the iPhone has limitations, like its sole availability through AT&T, say that it will nudge resistant wireless carriers to pay more attention to their customers’ wishes. “The iPhone is a fantastic device, but they don’t control the network,” said Craig Shapiro, head of content strategy and acquisition for Helio, the mobile phone maker and service company. “For these things to work, though, everyone has to get with the program.”
Communications companies know they have to adapt or risk being left behind. Glenn Lurie, president of national distribution for AT&T’s wireless business, said in an interview that it took an outsider like Mr. Jobs to generate interest in mobile’s potential that the industry could not muster itself. “The wireless industry has been around 20 years, and people have found the industry to be somewhat complex,” Mr. Lurie said. “Steve Jobs and the Apple team come at it from a different perspective.”
Most important, owners of Apple products stay faithful. A recent article in the Harvard Business Review said, by contrast, that in the consumer electronics category, customers of mobile phone services were among the most dissatisfied. Pricing plans and services were too confusing. Contracts were restrictive. Service among some carriers was unpredictable. And early attempts to offer video proved more frustrating than compelling.
“They don’t make it easy,” said Bill Sanders, vice president of mobile networks programming at Sony Pictures Television International. “Everyone I talk to says, ‘There are all these things that are wrong with the iPhone.’ But consumers can’t wait to get their hands on it. That’s because Apple makes it easy.”
This will not be Mr. Jobs’s first experience in redefining an industry. Many executives in the beleaguered music business hailed Mr. Jobs as a savior when the iPod was introduced in 2002 because it was an alternative to the illegal online sharing of songs. Three years later, though, they derided him in a war over pricing.
Film executives, who watched Mr. Jobs’s relationship with the music industry sour, have been more cautious in their dealings with him. In particular, major studios, including Warner Brothers Entertainment and 20th Century Fox, have resisted Mr. Jobs’s overtures to put movies on the video iPod unless he guaranteed copyright protection and reduced prices.
So far, Apple and AT&T are getting along. But even Hollywood blockbusters can have a surprising ending. “All I can speak to is that working with the Apple team for two years, the relationship has been terrific,” Mr. Lurie said. “I can’t speculate what will happen down the road.”
To be sure, all the parties in the three industries involved are circling each other warily as they seek to protect their overlapping interests. But as their ambitions collide, rivals are hiring talent from disparate fields to navigate through a unsettling era.
Cingular Wireless, which merged with AT&T, has lost a number of executives who left to join start-ups or television production companies. Among them is Jim Ryan, who helped develop mobile video at Cingular. He left in May to become chief executive of Mobile Campus, a messaging service for college students. Last year, Jon Vlassopulos, a former senior director of business development at Cingular, joined the television production company Edemol USA as a new-media executive.
A background in movies is proving valuable, too. Sherry Lansing, the former chairman of the motion picture group of Paramount Pictures, was elected to Qualcomm’s board last year, sought after for her keen knowledge of Hollywood. More recently, Christine Peters, the producer of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” was named to the board of Xero Mobile, a fledgling cellphone service aimed at college students.
“Filmmakers are not going to be happy having their films downloaded to cellphones with poor quality,” Ms. Peters said. “That’s the beauty of the iPhone. It’s simple and it looks good. Half the people who have these fancy cellphones don’t know how to use them.”

TV on cellphone screens? No thanks, say Europeans

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Europeans' interest in watching mobile television is as tiny as cellphone screens, a new study showed on Monday, even though the industry has been buzzing about offering TV on handsets for years.
Mobile operators hope that mobile TV could encourage users to spend an extra 5 to 10 euros a month, compensating for declining revenues from voice calls, but mobile television and video downloads ranked close to the bottom of consumer interest in a Gartner study in Europe.
Only about 5 percent of Europeans expressed interest in watching television or video on their cellphones in the next 12 months, the study said. At the same time some 20 percent of Asians said they would watch TV on their phone screens.
"I think the main reason is the compromise you are making on the device you need to carry to watch TV -- either too big if you want a nice experience or too small and you do not have a good experience," said Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst.
Also lack of consensus on business models, variety of different technologies and shortage of airwaves has been hampering takeup of mobile TV.
Because spectrum availability is not a problem in many Asian countries, commercial DVB-H broadcasts have already started in India and Vietnam, with Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia also set to open networks this year.
In Europe, three countries have started commercial networks.
Research firm Informa has projected entertainment services -- games, music, TV, adult content and gambling -- would grow to $38 billion by 2011 from around $18.8 billion in 2006.
Music has been the main driver for mobile entertainment so far, but players in the field have expected a boost from mobile television -- a conclusion thrown into doubt by the study.

Apple says unlocking software can damage iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc said on Monday that programs available on the Internet that allow the iPhone to be used with other service providers besides AT&T's Cingular network can irreparably damage the device.
Apple, which also makes the Mac computer, the iPod digital music player and runs the iTunes online store, said once an Apple-supplied software update is installed on the iPhone, it "will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable."
Since the iPhone's introduction at the end of June, Apple has said it expects to sell 1 million units by the end of this month. In the first two days it was on sale, Apple said it sold 270,000 of the gadgets.
"We are not doing anything proactively to disable iPhones that have been hacked or unlocked," Phil Schiller, Apple's head of worldwide product marking told Reuters.
Asked how widespread the practice of downloading unlocking software, he replied, "We do not know."
The Cupertino, California-based company also said an iPhone that fails to work because of the installation of the unlocking software is not covered under the warranty.
Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update later this week, the company said in a statement. In the United States, AT&T Inc (T.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is the only authorized service provider for the iPhone.
"Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones," the company said.
There are a number of unlocking software programs on the Internet, and, at least two of them, iUnlock and Anysim, can cause the iPhone to stop working once its software is updated, Schiller said.
"There may be others, but we don't know all of them," he said.
Apple sharply cut the price of the iPhone earlier this month and revamped its full iPod line, adding a model that can browse the Web and buy songs wirelessly.
He declined to comment on the company's financial performance so far in the quarter or its expectations for sales in the holiday sales period at the end of the year.
In the past few weeks, Apple and telecommunications service providers in Europe have been announcing deals to provide service for the iPhone, which handles phone calls, surfs the Internet, and sends instant messages and e-mail.
Shares of Apple rose $4.13, or 2.9 percent, to close at $148.28 on Monday on Nasdaq. The rise came after Citigroup (C.N: Quote, Profile, Research) raised its share-price target for the company.
In extended trade, the stock eased by 8 cents. So far this year, the stock is up about 73 percent.

Nokia unveils new unlicensed mobile access phone

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's top cellphone maker, unveiled on Thursday its new phone model 6301, which features unlicensed mobile access (UMA) technology.
Nokia said the new model would begin shipping in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2007 at an estimated retail price of 230 euros ($322), before subsidies and taxes.
UMA handset users can make calls over the Internet when they are in range of an unlicensed wireless network, such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. When they move out of range, the connection will automatically revert to a GSM, GPRS or UMTS mobile phone network.
Nokia started its first tests on UMA technology in July last year and it has already launched its 6086 UMA phone.

It's no secret that cell phones are the new fashion accessory. I find it
really interesting that a piece of technology has become so much a part of
our self-creation, because that is what syle is after all. Here is a look
into examples of the growing trend of mobile style.
Wired notes how cell phones leave "most other consumer electronics devices
in the dust" when it comes to fashion. It's the one accessory that goes with
you everywhere: from home, to work, to a night on the town. One article even
pinned cell phones as the new "bottled water" - think back to the time not
more than a year or two ago when everyone was carrying around a bottled
water on the streets. Cell phones are that new accessory. We've moved from
cigarettes to water to cell phones as the "cool" factor in fashion.
What started this trend? Well, some claim it started when changeable face
plates came out from Nokia in 1998. That was just the start of ringtones,
wallpapers, jewel charms, and phone purses. Think it's just isolated to us
girls? Think again. Our earlier post showed that guys were more interested
in syle than girls are when it comes to mobiles.
How much does celebrity endorsement influence your idea of which cell phone
is cool? Sales went up for the Sidekick model after the whole Paris Hilton
fiasco, even if this was not a direct endorsement. Or how about designer
endorsement? If a really crappy model of phone came out but was sold by
Gucci, would you buy it? Siemens tried to do couture, and it didn't work,
but that may just be too niche for demand to really grab hold of it. For
example, Motorola has released two phones from Baby Phat with $700 price
tags, and this is likely a better way to create that fashion cool with cell
phones.
Cell phones are making their way to the runways as acceptable fashion
accessories - kind of like the new bracelet or purse it would seem. John
Galliano showcased short jackets with cargo pockets on the sleeves at a
Spring fashion show this year - just goes to show that even those who wear
high fashion need to take along their phones with them! At the New York

at the show.

Now, what about using your phone - is that the part that is cool? Does
receiving a call, typing a text, or talking walkie talkie style into your
phone express style in and of itself? I think that it likely does. People
are not embarassed to talk on their phone in public - they walk around
loudly talking and gesturing as if this in itself showed their popularity.
An article in the New Yorker links the growing popularity of cell phones as
fashion items as a form of self-expression - "what you choose to tell the
world about yourself." I am really interested in how technology is being
integrated into self-expression. In one sense it shows our growing
dependence on technology, but in the other it may open us up to a whole new
way to express who we are. Our stock of available images, sounds, fashion
items is forever increasing, giving us more opportuntiy to develop our sense
of self and to express that in a unique way to the world. Even not using
your cell phone in public is a form of expression. Where a certain thing is
ubiquitous, such as cell phones and cell phone accessories, and yes even
text messaging, not to be a part of that "trend" is just as expressive as
contributing to it.

As we mentioned earlier, the key different between the BlackBerry Curve 8310 and the 8300 is the inclusion of GPS and the Vodafone Navigator package which includes route planning and can also factor in traffic and weather conditions. Maps are downloaded from a central server to keep them up-to-date.
However, our recent experiences with this sort of navigation system indicate that although it's useful to have a SatNav system on you "just in case", the interface on most phones isn't really suitable for use in the car - so you'll need to set the route in advance in most cases rather than "on the go".
The BlackBerry Curve 8310 is available now from Vodafone in Germany at just under €30 on a €45/month contract. Availability in other Vodafone regions is not known at the time of going to press.
